Farewell to our Fifth Graders and Retiring Teachers!
Although we are sad to see our fifth graders leave North Beach, we watch with pride as they move on to a new stage in their academic and social lives. Good luck to you all! We also wish all the best to Margaret Minar and Steve Sanders as they embark on new adventures in learning. We hope your retirement is rewarding and restful. Thank you for your service to our children!

Thanks to our WatchDog Dads!
Please join us in congratulating the WatchDog Dads who made the program's first year at North Beach a huge success! During this school year, 108 volunteer days were served by the WatchDog Dads, creating an additional 700 volunteer hours for the North Beach staff and students.
This great beginning will be used to improve the program next year with the goal of 150 WatchDog Dad Service Days for the 2009-2010 school year. Each Dad or Grand Dad on the Honor Roll served at least one full day as a WatchDog Dad Volunteer at North Beach. Several Dads served multiple service days. WatchDog Dads assist students with reading, math, recess and eat lunch with their son or daughter. Many thanks to all the Dads for their service, sacrifice and positive role modeling for students at North Beach!

Many thanks to Rett Hartmann and Rick Harris for organizing Field Day. And many thanks to all the parent and teacher/staff volunteers who made the day great fun for the kids!

2009-2010 PTA Reflections Art Contest
Hey all you artistic types! A very early heads-up that the theme for next year's National PTA Reflections Art Contest is (drum roll) . . . "Beauty." If your child could use some extra time to think about and create an artistic work for next year's contest, then you can keep the theme in mind this summer when your child is taking art lessons or a writing class or taking photographs on vacation or whatever! A little head- start never hurt anyone! Questions can come to me, Carrie Glenn, 365-3274.

The Lunchroom Lady is Desperate!
I have 37 children who owe money and less than three days to collect over $100. Please, please bring your child's account current. Thanks for your help. (Any leftover funds from this year will roll over to next year.) -- Miss Molly

Odds and Ends
Lost and Found: Please check for any missing belongings; school ends soon and remaining items will be donated to charity!

No Yearbooks or Report Cards: Students will not receive their yearbooks or report cards until all lunchroom debts and library fines have been cleared. Notices are going home regularly with students, so check the backpack.

From the Nurse's Office
Diseases that can be prevented cause more adult deaths per year than breast cancer. Each year 50,000- 70,000 adults die from diseases that could have been prevented with vaccines. The most deaths are from influenza, with 31 million cases and 36 thousand deaths. Yet only 28% of adults 28-49 years old get immunized. And only 45% of adults 40-64 years of age receive the shot. Adults also die from Pneumococcal disease, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis A, Meningococcal disease, Pertussis and even Chickenpox!! Another disease that is quite serious is Tetanus. As adults, it is important to get a Tetanus booster every 10 years. Anyone 60 years or older can receive an immunization for Herpes Zoster that causes Shingles. Preventing this painful condition is fairly easy and the illness is serious. Ninety-nine percent of all Vaccine-Preventable Deaths are in adults, not children. Yet, we don't hear much about the need to keep our immunizations current in adulthood. You can request an immunization record for yourself that is like the ones you keep for your children.
Some facts to remember: • Immunity may fade and booster shots are needed • Some vaccines were not available when adults were younger • Older people are more apt to get serious illnesses from infections • Vaccinations do not cause the disease they protect against • More vaccines are needed for international travel Summer may give you a chance to talk to you health care provider about your own immunizations and protect yourself from many preventable diseases. Garden Update!
We had a great showing at our garden work party on Sunday. Thank you so much to all who came! Ms. Sherman and Ms. Marquez's Kindergarten classes planted all the veggie starts. They did such a great job. They are also working on plant markers. The fifth graders in Mr. Sanders' class are working on a garden sign; thank you fifth graders! Thank you to the Greenwood Market for the $50 donation of plant starts. Also, thank you to the Greenwood Fred Meyer for the $50 donation! We have families/teachers signed up to water over the summer.
