The Principal's Corner

Hello Seals, November is going by fast! I want to take this opportunity to provide you with some updates regarding upcoming events-have a great week!

Music Instructor Position: As many of you know, Mr. Mark resigned from his Music in Residence position in Oct. We have taken steps to recruit for this position and plan to interview Dec. 1st and 2nd and plan to start our music program in Jan. We highly value this program and want to ensure that we hire a strong and experienced musician who can help take this program to the next level.

Parent/Teacher Conferences: We are conducting conferences Nov. 21st-23rd. If you have not scheduled a conference then please contact your child's teacher to schedule a date/time. Here are some examples of what you can expect:

  • You will receive your child's report card -- comments will not be noted on this reporting cycle as these items will be discussed at the conference (behavior, social, organization etc.) * Note: this timeline has changed since previous communication.
  • You will be able to review samples of your child's work.
  • Review math progress form.
  • Discuss any social and or behavior issues.

We need additional tech support: The tech committee would like to start something new this year -- we are hoping to establish a network of parent volunteers who are willing to come in at a set time each week or month so that teachers can sign up for assistance with any network/printing/computer issues they are having in their classroom or for teachers who want a tutorial on software such as Word, Outlook, etc. We will get more information out to you on this once we have a group of volunteers and a schedule in place. Please contact Kristine McLane kemclane@seattleschools.org

Reminders/Requests:

  • Dec. 1, Learn a Latté, 9:30-10:30am, Library. Topic: Teacher Observation. Attendees will watch a short video of a literacy lesson and dive deeper into Differentiated Instruction.
  • Please remember to sign in at the main office and wear your visitor badge.
  • No parking in the load/unload zone in front of the school.
  • No Bikes and Wheels 8:35 am to 3:20 pm.
  • No dogs on campus 8:35 am to 3:20 pm.
  • Supervision Times 8:35 am to 3:20 pm - please do not leave your child unattended prior to or after this time frame.
Make it a great week and remember... North Beach Seals Model Excellence!

All the best, RJ Sammons

From the Office

If your child feels a little "off" when coming to school, we suggest you tell him or her something like, "If you start feeling worse, tell you teacher. She (or he) and the office staff will help you decide what to do next. The office will call me if necessary."  By not saying that you will "come get" your child, many times the student finds that he or she feels better instead of worse.

When the school calls the main office number shows up on your cell phone or caller ID no matter what extension is used to call you. Please check your voice mail before returning the call. Also, teach your child to leave a message if he or she calls you from the classroom. The office will ALWAYS leave a message if your child is hurt or ill.

BINGO THIS FRIDAY, Nov. 18 at 6:30pm - Win Cash Money

This is your chance to win big money at a fun family event. Dinner will be available for purchase (pizza, hot dogs, fresh fruit and vegetables, chips and drinks) and cash prizes will be awarded. Doors open and dinner service begins at 6:15. Games start at 6:30. Want to get in on the fun? Sign up to help out here http://www.northbeachelementary.org/bingoform.htm or contact Kelly Traw ktraw@comcast.net.

Donate to the AGC today! We are short $22,155!

Important update:  Our Academic Giving Campaign has ended and we are $22,155 short of our goal (including all donations and pledged donations). These are the funds we need to pay for Art, Music, Tutoring and Technology. We must raise this money. Without these funds, one of these important academic enhancements will have to be eliminated.

Please pledge or donate at www.northbeachelementary.org/agc.

"The tutoring program is crucial to academic success at North Beach. Both of my children have received one on one help. They have graduated from the tutoring program and continue to use the special skills they learned. Every time I see a child out of class in tutoring I am so grateful on behalf of the child, the class and the teacher!"

Please contribute or pledge today to ensure academic success for all at North Beach!
Holiday Giving Tree
This might be a stressful time for your family this year, whether you have recently been laid off, or out of work for a while, or simply in a job that only meets your basic expenses. North Beach has a strong tradition of supporting each other. Any family that feels they could use a little help this holiday season should speak up.  We are looking for families that might need some assistance with gifts this year. Please contact either our school counselor, Lilia Goldsmith at legoldsmith@seattleschools.org or Sue Schoolcraft at sdschool@comcast.net. Also, look out for the winter wonderland in the front hall around the first of December to purchase gifts for our families.

Free Holiday Fun! OK Chorale Performs

Looking for some free, family Holiday fun? Ms. Lorang's choir, The OK Chorale, will be having 2 upcoming performances. On Dec. 9 at 7:30 at United Church of Christ (on 125th one block east of Greenwood) a concert/sing-along with cookies afterward. This is not a religious service, this is simply where we rehearse because it has great accoustics. On Dec. 10 at 6:00 at the annual Green Lake Luminaria Walk outside the Aqua Theater (southwest bank of Green Lake). The actual walk goes from 5-8. Dress for the weather, but it is beautiful with many community choirs along the way. Hope to see you there!
