Student VIP Presentations start this week!

VIP poster presentations will begin this week. Seven children took home materials for making the posters last week. I have times available on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday this week, and Monday, Wednesday and Thursday next week for presentations.  Students can bring their posters as soon as they are done. We will work out a schedule in class to make sure that everyone gets a turn to present.

The purpose of this activity is to give every child a chance to present something special about him or herself. We want every student to have a chance to shine!

Homework Updates Available Via Student Planner, Room 9 Homework Calendar and the North Beach Website

Fourth grade students are just learning to be independent in daily activities. It is still important for parents to check up on their children’s homework in order to give assistance and to help them organize the work that they need to do. The effort that you put into setting standards for your child at this age will pay off in greater independence for your child in later grades.

Room 9 students have three             options for keeping up on the homework.  Each day, your child copies his or her homework into the daily planner. I make an effort to look at every child’s planner to make sure the homework is copied correctly and then I sign the margin to show that I have checked it. If your child’s planner is not signed, please remind him or her to show it to me so that I can check it. Once you have checked the homework, sign the parent signature box for that day.

I send home a calendar with homework activities each Monday. This is also posted on the North Beach website.  Please check to be sure that your child has the day’s homework and is ready to turn it in.

Cedar River Watershed Field Trip

On March 23 room 9 and room 15 will have a field trip to the Cedar River Watershed. This is part of our ecosystem study this year and it ties in to the Salmon in the Schools project that we have been conducting with the Carkeek Park naturalists. These studies lead to a more complete examination of watersheds by fifth grade students to help them understand the delicate ecology of our natural environment.

Thank you to everyone who sent snack items for the room 9 morning snack. It looks like we will have enough to make it to Spring Break. We really appreciate your promptness as well as your generosity.

Homework

The homework calendar has returned to Room 9! . Download this weeks homework here. As noted in the last newsletter, the amount of homework that is being returned has dropped since we began relying solely on the planners to communicate assignments. As before, I will attach this to the Room 9 News each week.

It is important for students to spend time outside of school to review their learning. This will also help them to learn to organize their work, a big help in middle school!

Homework is due the day after it is assigned.

Reading Wheel assignment: Read books from eight different genres and write brief reviews. Completed reviews should be turned in as they are finished.  Completed Reading Wheels should be turned in by March 18. Open the below attached .pdf file for pointers on completing this assignment.
