Scrip Program
Program Coordinator: Sue Newton newtonds@aol.com
What is Scrip?
Scrip is a fundraising program that help raise money for the school while you shop. "scrip" means "substitute money" - in other words scrip is gift certificates from national and local retailers. They are the same gift certificates that you buy at the store, except that each time you buy one from North Beach Elementary we earn money!
How does Scrip generate money for North Beach?
The Great Lakes Scrip center acts on behalf of churches, schools, and other non-profit organizations by purchasing large amounts of scrip from grocery stores, department stores, gas stations, and other retailers. Because the scrip is purchased with cash up front, the participating retailers offer a substantial discount. You buy scrip for regular face value, but the PTA only has to pay the discounted rate for the same card. That means bulk of the discount -- from 2%
to 15% or more -- is retained by the PTA as revenue. For example, if you buy a $100 card for Safeway, our Scrip Program pays only $96 for your card; that means the PTA gets to keep the $4 difference.
The reason for the effectiveness of scrip is simple: families produce revenue by making purchases they would make anyway. Groceries, clothing, toys, gifts, even gasoline can be purchased with scrip.
